Medicine Buddha (Bhaisajyaguru, or Sangye Menla ), the Buddha of healing and medicine revered for dispelling physical, mental, and spiritual ailments. Seated in the full lotus posture (padmasana) atop a colorful lotus throne floating above a tranquil watery landscape, he is distinguished by his deep lapis lazuli blue skin, which symbolizes the healing power of ultimate reality and the purity of enlightened mind. His right hand extends downward over his knee in the varada mudra (gesture of boon-granting generosity), holding a stem of the medicinal myrobalan plant (arura), while his left hand rests in his lap holding a lapis-colored begging bowl filled with healing nectar and myrobalan fruit. Draped in golden monastic robes and featuring iconic marks of a Buddha—such as the blue topknot (ushnisha), gentle facial expression, and a soft circular halo—he sits peacefully beneath a sky adorned with the sun, moon, and stars.
